Hello all,

We are conducting a small survey if any one has the time I wonder if you would be able to tell us what are your top 20 WT features.

You can send them to

paul@prdsoftware.co.uk

or to the forum.

Many thanks.

Paul

Looking through the WT manual table of contents, these are the ones that stuck out as things I find indispensable and use very often. I may use others without recognizing it, and I certainly don't wish to detract from the awesomeness of the tools I haven't found myself needing as often.

1. Move points tool
2. Zoomer
3. Magic needle
4. WT rotate tool
5. camera tool
6. points along tool
7. polygon tool
8. cloud tool
9. blend tool
10. wall trim tool
11. squiggle command
12. date stamp tool
13. steel sections on Nuts & Bolts palette
14. bolts and screws on Nuts & Bolts palette
15. Welding symbol tool
16. Mirror by line
17. Match now
18. Move points tool
19. Move points tool
20. Move points tool (seriously)

My favorites:

tornado tool
magician tool
intersection points tool
rotate tool (finally figured it out thanks to this forum and use it constantly now)
square polygon tool
s-break tool
parallel polygon tool
parallel offset tool
balloon text tool
The move points tool is indeed excellent. I wish I could make it 'see' objects drawn with the parallel polygon tool (it works with the 'closed box' parallel polygon but not with the 'open end' parallel polygon.....of course it could be that I am missing something)

My final 10 favorites as a lump are the Topo Tools / Topography Tools combo. For me, these tools provide a necessary bridge to the Windows based total station world. Without their functionality, I would have had to jump ship.

I have my custom pallets combining PC and WT tools and I forget which are which. I cruised through the WT manual and created a list of the items that I regularly use. There are more than 20 here -- it would be hard to prioritize them -- I use them all depending on the particular drawing and phase of work I am working on. (This are listed in the order that I saw them in the manual.)

zoomer
move points
camera
magic wand
balloon text
section line
cloud
break line
S-break
parallel offset
blend
offset repeat
bisector line
trim
wall trim
fillet
chamfer
pitch dimension
area tool
nibble
lumber
hinge
insulation
electrical
door
window
various steel shapes
various bolts and screws
weld symbol
mirror by line
rotate by line
squiggle

I've enjoyed reading all of this.

When someone mentioned the Camera tool, I thought "What the heck is the Camera tool?" I had forgotten all about it but after thinking about it, it all came back.

There are no books on how to create software like WildTools, and you just follow your instincts on what is needed. I remember back in the early 1990's, I was getting ready to work on the Screw tool, which really interested me because I use that type of thing in my drawings, but Joe Burke was on me and said "Screw the screw tool, work on a move points tool!" I didn't know the significance of such a tool. There already was a Move Points command in PowerCADD. I didn't use it, but at the time Move Points command would beep when you used it, and I thought to myself, "I can write one that doesn't beep." No kidding, this is why I worked on it. And then I just did the tool the way it seemed logical and never thought much about it. Never occurred to me it was significant in any way.

Is this rational behavior of a sane person? I don't think so, but I take my medication now and I'm better...

But that's how the Move Points tool came to be. And I finally got around to writing the Screw tool when I worked on the Nuts & Bolts palette.

Alfred

PCaDD would not be viable for my staff or I without WT. Would have to consider other options with out it Smile
